On the challenges of vertical integration in the space startup environment

So you’re startup and you want to do something big in space. In order to actually accomplish something you have to attend to all the details for example for a satellite you’ve got to have power and communications and propulsion and then whatever payload you’re going to do be at robotics or sensors or unit Vertically integrated to provide all of that not to mention the manufacturing capability. This implies a minimum staffing level with the discipline mix that you need to do. There’s a really good example of this sitting out there and I will just say a and B for company names does not spill any beans Had a huge idea in order to accomplish that they needed to do something very specific they could have sought power supply experts, and the lake they chose to identify another company will call them who also had a high power application and as part of their development, head focused on actually developing power supplies to accomplish their tasks that same power supply could be adapted for company a so They collaborated they worked together that was their mutual benefit and money trading back-and-forth probably on pay we’ll give you extra dollars to develop this if you give us the same X dollars to implement it on paper you both have customers paying at the end of the year it balances out no cash is transferred. You have collaboration where nobody is actually making money off the other , that can happen just about every arena of the space startup realm
